Valentino King
Canal Street Kings was founded by Wolfy after his drag father the legendary Valentino King passed away in 2023. Our aim is to continue his legacy by creating a permanent space for drag kings in Manchester legendary gay village. Following in Valentino's footsteps we aim to create a safe and inclusive community, where everyone is welcome.
Valentino King - Drag King extraordinaire
Valentino King was born in Rochdale, Manchester in 1969 to English/Italian parents. His career spanned 30 years from humble beginnings as a band member of Femme Fatale and solo artist Gizell before his alter ego drag king Valentino King was created. It was of no surprise that success came quickly due to the quality and range of vocals, coupled with a mesmerising stage presence. Publicity was never far around the corner with TV, radio and numerous publicationsapproaching the rising star!
In the year 2010, Valentino King graced his presence for the first time in Manchester. With the drag Queens being so well represented across the country, Valentino inspired by Diane Torr, male impersonator and ‘Man for a day’ workshop creator along with Lady Gaga’s alter ego Jo Calderone; wanted to have kings represented in Manchester in the same way London and parts of the USA did.
Meeting with some aspiring kings on Manchester’s famous Canal St, Valentino encouraged the three kings, Boi Wonder, George de Michael and Our Kelly to set up the original Drag Kings of Manchester. What happened next was quite extraordinary. Nationwide drag kings travelled to meet up once a month in large numbers in the then Via Fossa. Other counties across the UK began to form their own groups. Venues were approaching Valentino. Vanilla, Churchills, The Birdcage in Manchester asking “Who are these kings and how do we book them?” Word was spreading fast that there was a safe inclusive space for everyone to be who they wanted to be and express their inner king! A Moto drag king Valentino stood by implicitly. His success knew no bounds- Britain’s got Talent, The Vauxhall Tavern, The Frog and Bucket whilst also travelling to Europe to perform.
Radio and national publications again wanted to interview Valentino frequently. The DKM guided by Valentino grew as a group. They became a community mentored by a king who encouraged their personal growth and stage development to a point they were performing under their own stage name. This is who Valentino King was….A mentor, father figure and a trailblazer for future kings to come. He was a Drag king extraordinaire. Passing the baton to his friend and confidant The King of Canal Street, Wolfy and the second generation of the Drag Kings of Manchester. This is his legacy. Long Live The King!
